If water is near outlets, cords, the electrical panel or appliances, or the ceiling is sagging, stay out of that area.
- If you can reach the breaker panel while standing on dry ground, switch off the breakers for the wet area.
- If you can't reach it from dry ground, don't. Call your utility, or 911 for a hazard.
- Never stand in water to touch anything electrical.
-
Start at the fixture that's leaking. Most have their own valve:
- Sink angle stops under the sink
- Toilet supply valve, behind or left of the toilet
- Washer hot and cold valves behind the machine
- Dishwasher valve under the kitchen sink
- Fridge ice-maker line valve
- Water heater cold-inlet valve on top
-
The main shutoff is where the water line enters the house.
- Round handle (gate valve): turn it clockwise until it stops.
- Lever (ball valve): turn it a quarter turn so the handle sits across the pipe.
-
Turn the AC off at the thermostat. Put a bucket or towels under the drip.
A clogged condensate line or an overflowing drain pan is a common cause. If the unit is new, the installer's warranty may cover it.
-
Close the cold-inlet valve on top.
- Gas: set the control to "pilot" or "vacation", or off.
- Electric: switch off its breaker (from dry ground).
-
Buckets under the drips. Move valuables and electronics up and out. Don't go on the roof in the rain.
